Founded in 1905, Brighton & Hove Albion, have been in the Football League since 1920. A successful run of games in the 1980s culminated in an FA Cup final appearance in 1983, ultimately ending in defeat to English giants Manchester United. The club got their nickname ‘The Seagulls’ as they are situated in the seaside town, Brighton and Hove.
Having spent 34 years away from the top-flight of English football, Brighton made their return debut in the 2016-17 season and have shown no signs of leaving the Premier League ever since. This feat remains especially impressive given the club’s precarious financial situation in the 1990s, which led to the sale of their home of 95 years, Goldstone Ground.
The decision to sell the stadium gave rise to significant fan pressure on the club’s board which led to lifelong fan Dick Knight becoming the club’s chairman between 1997 and 2009.
