Girona Futbol Club, founded in 1930 and based in the Catalonian city of Girona, has emerged in recent years as one of the most dynamic and ambitious sides in Spanish football. While historically a club that hovered in the lower divisions, Girona’s rise to La Liga in the 21st century captured the imagination of football fans across Spain. Known for its attacking style and passionate support, Girona FC has established itself as a respected opponent in Spain’s top flight and continues to attract growing interest from local and international fans alike.
Girona FC tickets are increasingly sought after, particularly for home fixtures at Estadi Montilivi. Whether facing Spain’s elite or fellow Catalan sides, demand continues to grow season after season.
Historic Girona FC Moments
For much of its history, Girona spent decades playing in Spain’s lower divisions. The club’s fortunes began to change in the early 2010s with the arrival of new investment and long-term strategic planning. After several near-misses in the promotion play-offs, Girona finally secured promotion to La Liga for the first time in their history at the end of the 2016–17 season. Their second-place finish in the Segunda División was a landmark achievement, bringing top-tier football to the city for the first time.
Their debut La Liga campaign in 2017–18 was equally historic. Girona finished mid-table and earned famous results, including a memorable home win over Real Madrid. These early triumphs signalled that Girona had not only arrived in the top flight but could also compete at the highest level.
Memorable Moments
One of Girona FC’s most memorable moments came on 29 October 2017, when they defeated Real Madrid 2–1 at Estadi Montilivi. It was a defining result in their debut top-flight season and sent shockwaves through Spanish football. The scenes of celebration that followed were unforgettable, as fans poured onto the streets of Girona to mark the upset of one of Europe’s giants.
Another key moment came during the 2022–23 season, as Girona returned to La Liga and recorded high-profile victories against some of Spain’s top sides. Their fearless, attacking football drew praise from pundits and fans, while home matches at Montilivi were once again packed with energy and optimism.
Biggest Rivalries
As a Catalan club, Girona’s most notable rivalry is with FC Barcelona. Although not historically on the same level competitively, Girona’s emergence in La Liga has brought more intensity to this fixture. Matches against Barcelona are highly charged affairs, with Girona fans eager to prove themselves against one of the world’s biggest clubs.
Another rivalry exists with Espanyol, based in nearby Barcelona. This regional derby carries more parity and edge, with both clubs representing different parts of Catalonia. These encounters are usually fiercely contested and generate strong atmospheres at both Montilivi and the RCDE Stadium.
Additionally, matches against other Catalan or Valencian sides, such as Levante or Tarragona-based Gimnàstic, have stirred local pride and regional competition throughout Girona’s rise through the Spanish league system.
Stadium Atmosphere
Estadi Montilivi, located in the south of the city, is Girona FC’s home and one of the most charming and intimate venues in La Liga. With a capacity of just over 14,000, the stadium provides a close-up view of the action and a strong sense of community. Supporters fill the stands with noise, colour, and flags, creating a spirited atmosphere that belies the stadium’s modest size.
The connection between the club and the city is strong. Matchdays are local events, drawing in families, lifelong fans, and new supporters who want to be part of Girona’s remarkable football journey. The atmosphere peaks during home fixtures against Catalan rivals or when hosting major Spanish clubs.
Ticket Information
Girona FC tickets are available for all home matches at Estadi Montilivi, though availability can be limited due to the stadium’s smaller capacity. Matches against Barcelona, Real Madrid, and regional rivals are particularly popular and often sell out quickly.
While official club outlets handle most ticket sales, OnlySeats lists Girona FC tickets from trusted providers. With interest growing season by season, especially from international football fans visiting Catalonia, securing tickets early is always recommended for the best matchday experience.
